Bio

Soccer has been an important part of my life since I was old enough to play and I remain very passionate about the game. Garden City Soccer Club was formed the year I was born in 1977, so I’ve literally grown up with it and am proud to now be a GCSC parent and coach.  I was a tenacious and elusive playmaker in my youth, which eventually earned me a starting position on varsity as a freshman and provided a very rewarding 4 years of high school soccer. The many athletic and life skills that I learned as a player are the foundation for my coaching philosophy and teaching the game to the next generation has been just as rewarding.

I’ve coached our GCSC Galaxy 2008 birth year boys since 2016. They have grown tremendously and compete at a high level in league play and tournaments, with two league titles, two tournament champ titles, and were finalists in three more since 2017. They have set a great example for the younger 2010 boys team we formed in 2018, who have also progressed to an impressive point going into this year’s tryout, reaching the finals in two tournaments and league play this past fall season. Having two teams close in age has also presented us with challenging cross-training and mentorship opportunities, and of course adds to the fun.

I strive to provide the best environment possible for players to become a success on and off the field. That goes well beyond reinforcing essential skills and maximizing team chemistry. My players learn about the emotional traps that cloud soccer intelligence and limit potential. I teach them the importance and meaning of creativity and vision, mental toughness and positivity, commitment and integrity, confidence, selflessness, trust, respect, and the rewards of relentless preparation.

Bio

Coach R.J. played soccer for 10 years and was a college athlete. Coach believes that developing players commitment, athleticism, skills and soccer intelligence is priority #1 over winning in the short term. Coach believes that it is not only possible, but required, to compete at the highest level while carrying a high bar of integrity and respect to those around us. Our coaching staff shows respect to the players and we demand that respect in return from players and parents in regards to our teammates and parents as well as the opponents and officials. The result is a competitive atmosphere that really truly is fun and supportive to all. A negative sideline will not be tolerated, on either side of the field.

Our 09 boys have made amazing progress in just 2 years having success in league play, tournaments and qualifying for the 2020 Jr. State Cup. We have a great foundation and a great core team. We are looking to add a second team in 2020-2021 and there will be spots available for both teams.

Bio

I am committed to focusing on player development.  My assistants and I strive to provide a safe, fun, and structured environment to allow learning and improvement of skills while building each players confidence within the game.  We emphasize a strong work ethic, good sportsmanship, sound decision making, and unselfish team play by encouraging and supporting each other.  Within play, we allow players the freedom to make mistakes and to improvise and adapt as it provides a great avenue for individual growth. Playing our best is what we strive for, and winning will take care of itself.  As long as we have learned, we have not lost.

We have been fortunate to maintain some player continuity through the years.  We practice twice a week for 90 minutes per session with an emphasis on touches on the ball and conditioning.  I regularly work with other coaches to set up scrimmages for practices to help with in-game teaching.  I also bring in professional soccer trainers for sessions throughout the year to help to develop and progress our coaching program and our players.  We play in 3-4 tournaments a year and we participate in winter session indoor soccer and practice indoors during inclement weather. These are paid for by team fundraising throughout the year so as to mitigate out of pocket costs for parents.  I have an “open door” policy for parent / player concerns and encourage all feedback.  We are always working to improve.  I look forward to meeting you.  Go Galaxy!

Bio

I have played soccer from age 5 through high school for the city of Garden City, soccer clubs such as Garden City Mustangs and Westland Warriors, as well as the for GC High School team. I continued through my adult years playing for fun and indoor soccer leagues. I volunteered to coach for my daughter’s Garden City U8 team. I believed early on that every child should have the opportunity to play and enjoy soccer, regardless of their ability level, experience, or financial situation. I have been coaching for 2 years, including indoor sessions. I find coaching rewarding and want to share my love for this incredible sport.

The vision for the team is to compete at the highest level while creating a fun, learning atmosphere. We will participant in tournaments, and indoor sessions during the off-season. I plan to continue to seek out sponsorship, training/clinics, and fundraising for the team. I have met an amazing bunch of girls and parents and look forward to continuing my journey.

Bio

I have coached multiple teams over the years starting in 2005 – present. I started as a U7 rec girls coach, coaching my oldest daughter Chelsea until she was U10. My coaching continued to my middle daughter Karis from U5-U11 rec and now I’m coaching my youngest Kayla which started at U5 rec. Starting in 2018(U12) I decided to take Kayla’s team to the select level.

I live in Garden City with my wife and 3 daughters. Soccer is pretty much our life, especially with all 3 playing at the same time. Our oldest daughter Chelsea, who made her varsity team as a sophomore and became a captain her senior year of high school, is now a senior in college. She played 1 year of college before she decided to hang up her cleats. Our daughter Karis who also made her varsity team as a sophomore will be playing her senior season starting 2020/21. Kayla, who will be in the 8th grade, vows to make varsity as a freshman to beat her sisters. Player development is very important to me. For a player to be successful, I believe sound technique and good footwork is where it starts. I believe it’s all about the team and playing the right way.  I love soccer and coaching it. I believe no one player is bigger than the team. One of my favorite sayings to the team is “we win as a team, we lose as a team, we run as a team”.

James has been a parent with GCSC since 2011 and became a Coach in 2014. After years or Travel/Rec play we moved the team to Select Level in 2018. James is a certified Referee through the State of Michigan and is also on the Board of Garden City Soccer Club as the Referee Assignor and a Select
Committee Member.

June has joined the Galaxy team as an Asst. Coach in the fall of 2019. Before joining as a coach, June would help assist during some practices with keeper guidance and training. June started playing with Dearborn Heights Soccer Club in 2002 where she was a keeper for most of her career. She played all 4 years of high school at Crestwood in Dearborn Heights. Her Freshman year she earned the title of MVP. June attended Defiance College in Ohio from 2014-2016 where she was a starting goalkeeper, after 2 years away from soccer to focus on her studies. In those two seasons at Defiance, she earned top rankings for saves and saves per game with 122 and 148 respectively for the HCAC. Her final season, she once again earned the title of MVP.

Scott has also joined our Galaxy team as an Asst. Coach in the fall of 2019. Scott has been on a field since 1999. During his early recreational soccer years, he helped lead his team out of Ferndale to 3 consecutive undefeated seasons. Scott played 3 years of Varsity soccer for Ferndale High School. While high school was selected to play NPL (National Premier League) soccer for Vardar FC, where he started as a center defender. Scott also played 1 year for Defiance College as center defense before he was injured.

We strive for a strong work ethic and consistent dedication for player development. Continued growth while challenging the player to know and understand the field and strategy is important. As coaches, we put a focus on team culture and accountability.
