Hello GCSC Families,

We understand everyone is anxious to know when we can get back to soccer and what the season will look like after being further delayed by the State’s safety measures and Executive Order. We continue to work with Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) and Western Suburban Soccer League (WSSL) to develop our modified Spring/Summer program.

Currently, our return-to-play date stands as June 1st, but we have a meeting scheduled with MSYSA on Friday, May 15. We plan on sending another update shortly after that meeting with more details.

As of now, we are expecting to organize a modified late Spring/early Summer program that could look something like the following as long as the June 1st return-to-play date does not change.

  • In-House Program – Kickstart and U5-U8 will start practices as soon as it is safe to do so, early June, and will run to the end of July. The U5-U8 teams will play 4 to 5 scrimmages within that same time frame.
  • Travel Recreational Program – U9 to HSO will start the same time, early June, and will run to the end of July. WSSL has canceled games for this program, but will support setting up scrimmages/friendlies with neighboring clubs. We are expecting these teams will play 4 to 5 scrimmages/friendlies.
  • Select Program – U9 to HSO Select teams will benefit most from using this time to regroup, train and schedule a few friendlies at their discretion to prepare players for the next level. We encourage any GCSC player that is showing potential and looking to be challenged to reach out and learn more about Select. Teams should be fully selected for next year by mid-June and then we will focus on organizing a Summer program (after the Independence Day holiday) to re-energize before Fall. More details about this year’s team selection process will be sent next week.
  • General note about Spring/Summer programs – We recognize timing will not be ideal, as many families spend time out of town, so we will focus on weekdays. We are also conscious of the fact that social distancing guidelines are likely to be relaxed in a phased approach and everyone’s level of comfort will be different. We choose to be optimistic and are planning for the best case, but the potential for modified programs should be more clear after the next State Association meeting on May 15th.

We know this isn’t the season you registered for, but we ask that you support us with patience as we work with MSYSA and WSSL to develop a Spring/Summer program that can still provide an opportunity for skill development and friendly competition in a fun and safe environment. Depending on how much soccer we are able to get in with a modified season, we are going to be issuing vouchers back for players’ accounts that are in good financial standing. These vouchers can be redeemed for the upcoming ‘20/’21 season.

There are a wide range of expenses to maintain the Garden City Soccer Club, even though we are a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. Because some of these costs are fixed, non-recoverable or deferrable, we are not in a position to offer a full refund for your Spring registration. Vouchers, as opposed to cash reimbursement, also allows for a larger percentage of your registration fee to be credited back to you.

The amount of the voucher code will be dependent on several factors specific to the registration options chosen by each player for the year, therefore, a separate email with the voucher code, voucher amount, and instructions on how to apply it to next year’s registration will be sent out early June to each family.

We also ask for patience and allow us time to respond to your emails. Our Board of Directors is made up of volunteers that are working through this pandemic just as you are. Our priority is to see that our club, that was founded in 1977, will get through this especially challenging time and rise above so that we can continue to serve our youth, their families and our community well into the future. We are here to support our coaches, parents and players and want nothing more to see them fully enjoying the beautiful game of soccer again as soon as possible.
